How to Shoot HDR10+ Video on Samsung Galaxy Phones

A decade in terms of improving camera and photography capabilities. Thanks to larger, higher-resolution sensors and computational photography capabilities, it is now possible to take stunning photos and videos even when shooting in low light.

However, the improvements haven’t been focused solely on photos. They have also included the field of video shooting and recording. While most smartphones now support 4K shooting, many phones have taken a step further and offer the ability to shoot HDR10+ videos. However, since this feature is still under development, many Samsung phone owners don’t know exactly how to find or use it. Don’t worry, in this article we will show you how to shoot HDR10+ videos on any Samsung Galaxy phone to get professional and high-quality videos.

What are the benefits of recording video in HDR10+ using Samsung phones?

HDR10+ was announced by Samsung in 2017. It is an enhanced version of HDR10 that provides better colors, contrast, and brightness. This is done by adding dynamic metadata to the video file to represent each scene more accurately on a frame-by-frame basis.

You may feel like we’re talking about Dolby Vision. But in fact, there is a difference between the two technologies. HDR10+ is supported by popular streaming services such as Prime Video and Google Play Movies as well as streaming devices such as Chromecast with Google TV and Roku Express 4K Plus.

So, you need a screen or TV certified with HDR10+ to watch videos in their full quality. If your device does not support it, it means that it will not be displayed at its full resolution on the screen, and you may even notice that the colors are dull in the scenes.

How to record HDR10+ video on Samsung Galaxy phones

For several years, Samsung has allowed most Samsung Galaxy phone owners to record HDR10+ videos. But unfortunately, these videos will be at 30 frames per second only. Additionally, you cannot record HDR10+ videos from the front camera.

Steps to record HDR10+ videos on supported Samsung Galaxy phones:

  1. Open the Camera app and click the Settings icon from the top left corner.
  2. Under Videos, click on Advanced Settings, then enable the HDR10+ Videos option.

You may notice the lab symbol, which means that the feature is still in beta. For this reason, it is not present in the main settings menu. But from now on, any video you shoot will be in HDR10+ resolution. However, if you try to enable 8K resolution or increase the frame rate, HDR10+ resolution will be automatically disabled.
