How to Activate Dark Mode on Google Search

Like all other websites that allow you to switch between dark and light modes, you can also activate dark mode on Google Search. This converts the entire search experience to a dark theme. You may be wondering why Google decided to develop a dark mode feature on its main search engine and why most of us prefer dark mode to light mode.

All reports and scientific research have proven that dark mode is better for the human cornea than light mode. Additionally, many users have reported feeling more comfortable when switching to dark mode.

Studies have shown that dark mode helps conserve battery power, especially on smartphones. So, in this article, we will show you step-by-step how to activate dark mode on Google search easily.

Activate dark mode on Google Search on the desktop

If you want to activate dark mode on Google Search whether you are using a computer running Windows, Linux, Mac, or ChromeOS, you can easily do so as long as you use Google Chrome, Firefox, or Microsoft Edge.

To activate dark mode on Google search, follow these steps:

  1. Open the browser
  2. Go to the Google page by visiting the following link https://www.google.com/
  3. After the page loads, click on Settings in the lower right corner.

Secondly, from the drop-down menu, choose the first option, Search Settings.

Then you will be transferred to the search settings page, and you will find a new set of options and settings on the far left of the window, choose the third Appearance option or Appearance in English.

On the new page, you will find three options. The dark mode option is in the middle. The other two options are light mode and default mode. The default mode works based on your operating system’s settings. So, if your operating system is in dark mode, clicking “Default” will also switch Google Search to dark mode. Don’t forget to click the blue “Save” button and then “OK” to confirm the changes.

In fact, the steps on the smartphone are very similar to the steps on the desktop. Open the browser on your phone and click on the three horizontal bars icon at the top of the screen. From the pop-up menu, choose the Settings option. Then, under Appearance settings, choose the second option, dark theme. Then scroll down and click on the blue Save button to save the new settings.

Although humans are naturally better at seeing in daylight, we’ve evolved to also function in low light conditions. This ability translates to our digital world as well, with some users strongly preferring dark mode interfaces, while others favor light mode. If you fall into the dark mode camp, here’s a quick guide to activating it on Google Search.
